A Triangular Theory of Love Essay - 16226 Words
A Triangular Theory of Love This article presents a triangular theory of love. According to the theory, love has three components: (a) intimacy, which encompasses the feelings of closeness, connectedness, and bondedness one experiences in loving relationships; (b) passion, which encompasses the drives that lead to romance, physical attraction, and sexual consummation; and (c) decision/commitment, which encompasses, in the short term, the decision that one loves another, and in the long term, the commitment to maintain that love. The amount of love one experiences depends on the absolute strength of these three components, and the kind of love one experiences depends on their strengths relative to each other. The three componentsâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦In general, the intimacy component might be viewed as largely, but not exclusively, deriving from emotional investment in the relationship; the passion component as deriving largely, although not exclusively, from motivational involvement in the relationshi p; and the decision/commitment component as deriving largely, although not exclusively, from cognitive decision in and commitment to the relationship. From one point of view, the intimacy component might be viewed as a warm one, the passion component as a hot one, and the decision/commitment component as a cold one. The experience of love can be partitioned in a number of ways, and so it is important to note at the outset that the present partitioning into intimacy, passion, and decision/commitment is not the only one possible, nor is it even valid for all possible purposes. Nevertheless, the argument will be made that the pro1 My use of the term components in this article differs from my use of the term in my theorizing about intelligence (e.g., Sternberg, 1985), where the term is used to refer to a mental process. 119 120 ROBERT J. Outline the argument supermarket power is a zero -sum game Free Essays
Outline the argument supermarket power is a zero -sum game BY bluebell Outline the argument that supermarket power Is a ââ¬Å"zero-sumâ⬠game Before we discuss the argument let us understand first what the terms ââ¬Å"powerâ⬠and ââ¬Å"zero-sumâ⬠mean. Power is a complex term used denote influence, control and domination, (Taylor, et al. 2009,p. We will write a custom essay sample on Outline the argument supermarket power is a zero -sum game or any similar topic only for you Order Now 59). The power used by supermarkets includes buying and market power. The big four supermarkets in the U. K. Account for approximately 75% of the food and groceries market therefore giving them significant market power. Their buying power Is the ability they have to negotiate prices with suppliers and the rage chains thus being able to demand discounts when buying In such large quantities. This gives them the ability to influence things such as pricing, for example offering goods at below cost prices. The term zero-sum game is used when one partyââ¬â¢s gain will be anotherââ¬â¢s loss therefore equaling a zero sum. A good example of this is slicing a pie, if one person takes a large slice there is less for everyone else. The pro supermarket campaigners argue that the supermarkets use their power for good and all parties Involved benefit to some extent creating a positive sum gain but he the following argues to the contrary__ As shoppers they offer us a wide variety of products at affordable prices, in accessible locations. Additionally they offer employment, boosting local skills and helping to draw in other businesses such as restaurants and retailers to sometimes failing local economies but at what cost to others? Do the low prices mean that somewhere down the supply chain someone elseââ¬â¢s profits are being squeezed? Has the out of town retail park been a catalyst In the decline of Britainââ¬â¢s high streets? In 2006 retail commentator Judi Bean reported hat the big four operated around 3900 stores with Tests alone taking one pound at the tills for every three we spend. Since then they have continued to grow branching out into the corner shop concept and opening an additional 1500 stores in a bid to capture even more trade. In years gone by our towns would have a variety of independent shops made up of butchers, bakers and fishmongers, but these are in decline and we are now dominated by by big chain stores offering us practically Identical goods at very similar prices. If this Is the case are they really offering us any hospice at all? Across the country they monopolies towns and areas where small local businesses are unable to compete on pricing being forced to shut down. Food writer Joann Blackman, (2005) uses Dundee as an example and recalls that in the sass the town had ten bakers; now there are two left, five fishmongers with one remaining and eight or nine butchers only one of which has survived and six grocers where again only one has survived.. In their place are four Testes, two Sad, a Morrison and a Kingsbury. In her pollen there Is a distinct correlation between the arrival of the gig chains and the demise of the small independents, thus implying a zero-sum game. The supermarkets have an immense buying power and their supply chain stretches across the globe. When dealing with the large conglomerates like Proctor and Gamble, Milliner and Nestle the balance of power is pretty much even, as their global muscle puts them in a strong position to negotiate. However the farmers, such a fortunate position. Small suppliers claim that the supermarkets are continually putting pressure on them, coercing them into prices cuts that push them to the point that there economic livelihood is in doubt. This relationship between the suppliers and supermarkets can be depicted as a David and Goliath affair, with the small independents up against the big multiples Just as the small independent stores on the high street are up against the big chain stores as previously mentioned. With this pressure being applied to suppliers to keep costs down they in turn pass this on to their employees. Here in the I-J we have low paid often migrant workers cutting, sorting and packing vegetables and salads for the big stores. Felicity Lawrence has written about the exploitation of these workers in her book Not on the Label (2004) and in newspaper investigations. She highlights how agency workers, often from eastern European countries such as Romania, Poland and Bulgaria, are employed by ââ¬Å"gang mastersâ⬠to work on farms and in processing and packing plants and are frequently paid hourly rates below the minimum wage, are subjected to illegal deductions and are bussed from Job to Job at their employers will. These people are not directly employed by the supermarkets but, she claims, that they are aware of the practices and turn a blind eye to it so they can continue to benefit from he situation. Additionally she points out that you will not see any such evidence of this on labels of the packets of salad or bags of chicken pieces which line their shelves. Lawrence implies that we as consumers can indulge in cheap products at the expense of those exploited and often vulnerable workers. You could therefore infer that the supermarkets are using their power or dominance to control the labor market. For us to gain from the low prices at the checkout someone else must lose out in the case it is the suppliers and their workforce. With this in mind let us look rather field at the workers in such places as Bangladesh. In 2006 and 2007 The War on Want, a U. K. Based non-governmental organization, made accusations against Sad and Tests that they were boosting profits and the expense of the workers in the sweatshops of Bangladesh. They carried out a survey in six large facilities in Dacha, each employing between 500-1200 workers. The results of the survey showed that the worker, of which the majority are female, had been subjected to overcrowding and unhygienic work conditions along with forced overtime and verbal intimidation, tit access to trade unions being refused. All the factories surveyed were known to be supplying cheap clothing to the I-J market, specifically Tests and Sad and all were paying wages below that needed to provide for themselves and their family. The pressure applied by the stores on the factory owners to keep costs down means that they have no room to maneuver. The war on want claim that it the absence of a living wage in such places that keep our Jeans, shoes and other clothing at such low prices. Taking all of the above into account we can conclude that although we as nonusers benefit from low pricing and abundance of choice and the supermarkets continue to increase their profits, there are many within the chain that donââ¬â¢t benefit so greatly. We can therefore say that supermarket power is definitely a zero sum game. Word count ââ¬â 1134 Bean, J. Logistics Service Quality Evaluation System
Question: Discuss about the Logistics Service Quality Evaluation System. Answer: Introduction: I have been specializing in supply chain management and logistics. I have been assigned with the task of identifying future challenges, which would be influencing my area of specialization. There are various activities that is acknowledged in the supply chain management and it includes new product development, marketing, customer service and finance. Logistics on the other hand comprised of activities such as distribution, procurement, inventory management and maintenance. Concerning my area of specialization, I have conducted a secondary research on identifying challenges faced in this area. In this regard, I have identified relevant global mega trends and discipline specific challenges required by professionals for embracing and accommodating needs of future. The aim of research is to identify area of diversity, relevant global mega trend and discipline specific challenges faced by supply chain management. The various research questions are: What are the specific challenges faced by supply chain management and logistics? How Supply chain management contributes in achieving maximum level of customer satisfaction? What are the mitigation measures adopted for reducing supply chain risk in organization? Explanation of supply chain management, logistics, and work diversity that took place in this field: The major new development in the global trade in logistics area that are expected to play a significant role. This would be affecting every business of export and imports of goods. Trade compliance firm and customer brokerage in North America have focused on simplifying the movement of goods through international borders. Simplicity to trade processes and access to open market have resulted in business expansion and it has resulted in creating unprecedented opportunity. Supply chain is involved in through the downstream and upstream linkages in the different activities and processes that reduces values in the form of services and goods (Beske and Seuring 2014). Managing the supply chain leads to the coordination of location, production, inventory and transportation in the supply chain for achieving the efficiency and best responsiveness of the markets being served. It has been depicted that for meeting the new demands there is a need on part of logistics provider to adapt to global c hanges and this might call for partnership or service combination between local and global providers. Certain areas such as primary fixed cost and warehouse and economies of scale having come expected with ships is difficult to achieve. I have come to know that supply chain organizations with continuing global growth will have complex and larger supply chain. There are five major trends identified by me that has impacted business globally. Trend is regarded as change in global scale that are verified with global data and it is seen that in light of these trends, business are changing and identifying their strategies. Demographic changes is one of the trend that is affecting the labor force and this will it more difficult for companies for acquiring talent in developed countries. Majority of the companies are changing the way they are attracting and retaining employees (Beske et al. 2014). Many countries have been experiencing challenges in supply chain and there is a need on part of government, logistics service providers and companies. Extended supply chain will have more risks and number of suppliers, markets, factories, global service providers will increase. Implication of this demographic change is that the amount of tax imposed by government and this would lead the companies to revise their business models for increasing in pension costs. It is required by workers to improve their skills or learn new technical skills for staying competitive in job markets (Chen and Shen 2015). Identification of broad trends influencing business and area of specialization: Another trend is the advancement in technology and this new developments helps in creating new industries. Breakthroughs have resulted from advances in nanotechnology, mobile technology, research, development, and mobile technology. Companies tackle such changes by anticipating how they will affect the customer trends. Implication of advancement in technology and use of the technology will be a necessity instead of advantage. Global warming is one of the trend that has hugely influenced supply chain management of organizations. There have been change in the climatic condition due to rise in weather and extreme sea levels. Such change has resulted in making it harder for creating great demand for resources. Scarcity in resources have been driven by growth in population and changes in weather. Due to such changes, there is an increased regulation that is directed towards sustainability and conservatism. Due to climatic change, there is an increased uncertainty about the manifestation and magnitude of the impact on supply chain management. There have been a multiplier effect on supply chain risk. There can be disruption in transport and availability of raw materials, this will result into shocks of global supply chain, and climatic change is regarded as risk multiplier. Supply chain networks run operational and reputational risks attributed change. Pressures of stakeholders are paving the way for decarbonization of supply chain and it is the obvious implication of supply chain management. Drivers of climatic change like environmental treaties are posing great threat for network of supply chain network and business opportunities. There have been emerging gain in market power, west has been the economic powerhouse. Due to increase in export, innovation and population are gaining more influence. As these countries have invested and trade and they are agreeing to grow at more rapid rate. More competition on global scale is due to shift in economic power. This will reduce the influence of western markets and made business seek opportunities placing established market, which is disadvantageous for growth (Melnyk et al. 2014). In order to gain a tax break, western government would notice large companies and they left settle in emerging markets. This would lead to lower taxes in order when moving broad. The relationship of market power to supply chain is not developed fully. Due to gradual increase in the market share of retailers, their position within the global food supply chain remains consolidated. This comprise of expansion into the distribution, production and processing sectors. For instance, Woolworths have been continuing to consolidate their closed supplier and buyer chains and suppliers incurred great costs and weakening their long-term financial viability. Using the appropriate information technology, would lead to supply chain with a competitive advantage. Inventory management, transportation and production are the areas where the usage of such information technology would reduce costs within the supply chain management. Some of the information technologies would reduce within the supply chain that will increase the efficiency. One of the component of supply chain management was in area of transportation. This would lead to greatly benefit from advancement in green technology. Another aspect of technology is packaging that has significantly affected the supply chain management. The state of security measures and practices at the forefront of supply chain management has been changed by cloud technology. Supply chain management providers would be able to adjust to the changing market volatility due to the technological advancement. One common challenge is rapid growth that provides solutions (Markmann et al. 2013). These are revolutiona ry technological that help shippers in streamlining their booking, tracking, freight quoting and reporting. Some of other challenge common to the supply chain in this context are warehouse are poor visibility across carriers, capitalizing in emerging global opportunities and navigating a morass regulations and rules. Technological aspects have bene harnessed by enterprise organizations for meeting the logistics challenges (Ellram and Cooper 2014). Identification of specific challenges faced by supply chain management and logistics: Some of the challenges faced by supply chain management is the cost cutting of transportation followed by improving customer service and business process improvement. I have researched that globalization has been changing the way companies are using their supply chain management for gaining market shares. Greater change in supply chain variability is due to the longer supply chain and disruptions arising from that. Due to multiple earthquakes, many organizations have encountered with supply disruptions (Fawcett et al. 2014). Supply chain visibility by unwillingness of the department to collaborate and inhibited by lack of capabilities. In nutshell, it can be said that leaders of supply chain struggles with globalization, risk management, cost containment, increasing demand of customers and supply chain visibility (Hoekstra et al. 2015). Organizations are forced to embark on new journey with changing market demand and shorter products life cycle. Finding just a lean concept is not the challenge facing supply chain but there needs to be working lean solution. In this regard, I would recommend the organization to have the value stream analysis, having an optimization process and using a service for design. Management of risk is becoming comprehensive with increasing in the complexity of supply chain management. Intelligence will help in developing a sustainable supply chain that would make wise uses of resources and positively influencing the communities in which they are operating. Advanced analytic skills possessed by managers helps in identification of finer segmentation of customers so that the offers are tailored accordingly (Lu et al. 2015). Substantial recommendation responding to future challenges of my specialization area: I have chosen the profession of supply chain managers and this will help me in discovering some of the factors leading to change in the supply chain management. I would be using my profession to solve various challenges faced with by the supply chain department if an organization. I would be responsible for totaling down the number of suppliers and would be responsible for finding suppliers with reliable and consistent service at such price that does not hurt the bottom line of supply chain (Waters and Rinsler 2014). This would help in dealing with the cost containment of supply chain management. I would be responsible for ranking the cost containment as the first priority of business. Some of the things that is quite evident in programs and activities of my profession is the intense focus on cost containment, which is one of the top global challenge facing supply chain. Another greatest management challenge tackled by supply chain managers is the visibility and collaboration that is required to get the information. In this regard, there is no attraction towards programs and activities. I would be citing significant cultural barriers for achieving the level of visibility required by supply chain management. I would be more focused on improving visibility and contribute to making collaborative planning with vendor management inventory and suppliers. Effective risk management has been prevented due to lack of standardized processes, inadequate technologies and insufficient data (Stadtler 2015). As a supplier chain manager, I would be having programs in place for monitoring compliance. As a manager, I would be taking risk management as a further step and would incorporate it into the plan and using the disruptive and monitoring the events. As a supply chain executive, there is an urgent need required for leadership talent. Such acquisition of talent is faced in Asia pacific region. There is a significant change required in executives of supply chain executives that involve rotating of leaders. I would be stimulating various course of action and will be responsible for making smarter supply chain management. In the event of disruptions occurring, I will be responsible for reconfiguring supply chain. Smarter supply chain would be equipped with simulation capabilities and sophisticated modeling (Coyle et al. 2016). Operation of supply chain would come with visibility and I would be responsible for tracking the supply chain of smarter supply chain and rainfall that would help in optimizing irrigation. Shipping methods and delivering routes would be done by monitoring traffic status. As a supply chain manager, prediction of shift in energy, labor and consumer buying, I would be following economic indicators and financial markets. In the todays technological era, managers are well equipped with analytic, modeling and simulation capabilities for making the smarter supply chain (Christopher 2016). For managing the risk and volatility arising with the global supply chain, I would recommend the organization to develop supply chain. This would help in mitigating as much as supply chain risks as possible. It is required on part of company to assess and identify the potential issues, gaining the transparency into the operations of suppliers by making the assessment of financial viability and working through what if scenarios (Zhang 2014). Conclusion: From the above discussion of the several challenges faced by supply chain management, there is a requirement for optimization and integration. Global quality problems and delivery bottlenecks would be identified with the help of increased visibility from interconnected and highly instrumented supply chain. With respect to technology, I would recommend fasteners to be highly functional. An organization can employ application-engineering service that offers fastening technical knowhow for supporting the development of new products. Reference: Beske, P. and Seuring, S., 2014. Mdma Essays - Neurochemistry, Neuropsychology, Nervous System
Mdma Can there be a Relationship between Ecstasy and Memory in the Human Body? Target Article: Parrott, A.C & Lasky, J. (1998) Ecstasy (MDMA) effects upon mood and cognition: before, during and after a Saturday night dance. Psychopharmacology, 139, 261-268. Additional Article: Parrot, A.C., Lees, A., Garnham, N.J., Jones, M., ecstasy: evidence for memory deficits. Journal of Psychopharmacology, 12, 79-83. Rationale and Variables: The Experiment that was conducted in class determined the affects of ecstasy or MDMA on the participants memory. In addition to testing for their ability to recall information it also looked at the number of false memory that were related to the actual word slow in the class study. In the experiment Dr. Earleywine used a list of words that were to be memorized, and recall in a given time. This study is related to another experiment conducted by A.C Parrott and J. Lasky. In their study they looked at the effects of ecstasy or MDMA on mood and cognition. They tested three groups: non- MDMA, novice-MDMA users, and regular MDMA users. They used different methods to test the three groups, included in the methods was word recall, which was also used in the class study by Dr. Earleywine. The result from that experiment showed that ecstasy or MDMA users did have memory problems. Another study was also conducted by A.C. Parrott, A. Leess, N.J Garnham M. Jones, and K. Wesnes, which was relate also to the other experiments. This experiment was conducted using three groups: non-MDMA, novice-MDMA and regular MDMA users. They used series of methods to conduct their study, and found their results similar to the earlier study. Analyzing the finding of the two studies, Dr. Earleywine decided to do a study with the mind set of making a connection between the rates of intrusions that participants who have used MDMA, compared with the rate of intrusions with participants, who did not use MDMA. The independent variables were the two groups MDMA users and non-MDMA users, and the dependent variables are the intrusions, and words recalled. Methods: The data for the experiment was collected form students that were taking psychology at University of Southern California. The participants included 145 women and 92 men. The ethnicity background included Caucasian, African/Caribbean, Asian/Pacific Islander, Latino, Native American, and others, which were not specified. The age of the participants averaged 19.578 years. The procedure of experiment started when Dr. Earleywine distributed the surveys to the participants. In the survey, questions regarding ecstasy and other drugs were asked. The participants were asked to put a check next to statements that were true to them. In the statement the participants were asked if they used MDMA in there life time or if they have never used it. They were also asked their race, age, sex and year in school. When the participants completed the questioner, Dr. Earleywine read a list of 16 words, pausing a few seconds between each word. When he was done reading the list, there was a 30-secon ds period of silence in the lecture room. After the 30-secondes, the participants were asked to recall words that they believed were read and to write them on the back of one of the surveys. Results: The study that was conducted produced results that were not very significant to our predicament. We predicted that the data we would receive would back up the two studies that were conducted, and would also be strong enough to make a statement of its own. But our prediction was far form backing up the two articles that we read. It was stated that 63.7% never used MDMA and 36.3% used MDMA in their lifetime. When the data was analyzed between the two groups, for intrusions and target intrusions they were identical for the most part. The MDMA users in our study were not more likely to make target intrusions. In the recall area of the study, the non-MDMA users recalled an average of 8.8600 words out of 16, and MDMA users averaged 8.1125 words. For the intrusion part of the study the non-MDMA users made 1.0200 intrusions on average and the MDMA users averaged 1.0000 intrusions. This result

Critical Success Factors (CSF) Analysis Critical Success Factors (CSF) analysis is one of the more difficult strategic management tools to understand, and is even harder to use effectively in real-world management. If properly applied, however, CSF analysis does provide a robust and very practical assessment for strategic planners and can be very effective. As with most management tools, CSF analysis is probably more effective when used together with another, complementaryà tool such as SWOT or PEST analysis, because the best use of the CSF analysis is asà a tool for planning and exercising control techniques over processes, rather than as an environmental assessment tool. What Are Critical Success Factors If business and management researchers had an easy answer to that question, perhaps CSF analysis would not be such a challenge to learn to use well. In the most general sense, CSFs are the small number of activities that absolutely must be undertaken effectively for the company to have success. What those specific activities are is a source of confusion, because they are entirely dependent on the unique circumstances of the firm. That has not, however, stopped researchers from trying to develop a definitive, universal list of CSFs that can apply to any company. In a study done about five years ago (K.J. Fryer, J. Antony A. Douglas, ââ¬Å"Critical success factors for continuous improvement in the public sectorâ⬠, The TQM Magazine, vol. 19, no. 5, 2007), researchers reviewed 29 separate studies on CSFs and interviewed a number of organizations, and came up with a chart that tells us exactly nothing about which success factors are indeed ââ¬Å"criticalâ⬠(see Table 1): Table 1. CSFs and Their Importance Depending on Business Sector Success Factor Percentage of studies and businesses surveyed which defined the factor as ââ¬Å"Critical,â⬠by business sector: Mixed Sectors Manufacturing Service Public Sector Management commitment 100% 86% 100% 100% Training learning 67% 57% 100% 75% Supplier management 67% 43% 67% 50% Customer management 60% 57% 57% 50% Quality data measurement reporting 47% 14% 33% 50% Corporate quality culture 47% 57% 67% 50% Communication 27% 29% 0% 75% Teamwork 20% 29% 0% 50% Employee empowerment 73% 71% 67% 50% Process Management 47% 29% 33% 75% Organizational structure 47% 57% 100% 50% Product design 27% 29% 0% 25% Ongoing monitoring assessment 20% 14% 0% 50% The problem of choosing appropriate CSFs is immediately apparent; management commitment is an obvious choice, but it seems rather at odds with what we learn in management studies that a factor such as ââ¬Å"Employee empowermentâ⬠would be fairly important to many different business sectors, while factors that should complement that ââ¬â Communication and Teamwork ââ¬â are not considered very important at all, and somewhat incredibly are apparently completely ignored by service-sector businesses. Wanna know more? Go here: Critical Analysis Writing SWOT Analysis Five Forces Analysis The ADL Matrix and Gap Analysis Buy a Great Paper Online But of course, this single example should be taken with a grain of salt; as they say, your results may vary, and if there is one valuable takeawayà from it, it is the suggestion of success factors that may be considered as a starting point, regardless if they are eventually found to be actually ââ¬Å"criticalâ⬠or not to a specific organization. It is also important to remember that CSFs are not fixed; they can and probably should change as the circumstances of the business change. For example, other studies have found that it is both common and relatively beneficial for firms facing financial or other crises to shift their CSFs to ones with more short-term effects and change the focus back to a more long-term perspective once the immediate difficulties are resolved. Developing Using the CSF Analysis The interesting thing about using the CSF analysis is that the process of determining what your organizationââ¬â¢s critical success factors really are is essentially the whole point. Once the CSFs are identified, steps to see that they are managed properly can be developed using different tools or good old experience and imagination; in many instances, simply identifying what may be a critical success factor and carefully examining why it is indeed ââ¬Å"criticalâ⬠to the firm suggests the way in which it should be handled. While there are some data management and other analytical tools that can help in selecting CSFs ââ¬â for example, DEMATEL (Decision-Making Trial and Evaluation Laboratory) software applications ââ¬â the majority of the process is good old-fashioned intuition and discussion. But there are a number of conventions that should be followed to give the selection and analysis process the best chance of success. First, CSFs should be assessed in a ââ¬Å"top-downâ⬠fashion; the analysis is not one that is ideally-suited for ââ¬Ëhorizontalââ¬â¢ or ââ¬Ëcollaborativeââ¬â¢ organizational structures. Success factors should be judged according to the relevance to the business as a whole, then individual business units or departments, then down to the individual level; if at some level the success factor is not ââ¬Å"criticalâ⬠, then it needs to be reassessed. The reason for this is that the number of CSFs should be kept to an absolute minimum. This prevents conflicts in objectives and processes and helps to prevent a dilution of effort among too many factors. Second, to avoid overlooking any factors that should be considered ââ¬Å"criticalâ⬠, potential CSFs should be assessed according to the ââ¬Å"five sources of organizational successâ⬠, a methodology developed in the early 1980ââ¬â¢s by MIT researcher John Rockart. Industry CSFs are conditions and operational circumstances that are common to firms within the same sector. Peer CSFs are critical success factors for oneââ¬â¢s competitors; this obviously requires an accurate and detailed competitive analysis to be done as a prerequisite to the CSF analysis. Environmental CSFs are related to the firmââ¬â¢s political, economic, and market environment, and can be identified byà a method such as a PEST analysis. Temporal CSFs are success factors that are only important at particular times ââ¬â such as in crisis situations as described earlier ââ¬â and are most likely to change. And finally, Managerial CSFs are success factors relevant to the management of the fir m at different levels; identifying these may seem to run counter to the ââ¬Å"top-downâ⬠process, but in reality actually helps to focus it by revealing internal conflicts in objectives.

Thermosetting Plastic Definition (Thermoset)
Thermosetting Plastic Definition (Thermoset) A thermosetting plastic is a polymer that irreversibly becomes rigid when heated. Such a material is also known as a thermoset or thermosetting polymer. Initially, the polymer is a liquid or soft solid. Heat provides energy for chemical reactions that increase the cross-linking between polymer chains, curing the plastic. The rate of curing may be increasing in many cases by increasing pressure or by adding a catalyst. Examples Many common plastics are thermosets. Juvenile Delinquency Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 1
Juvenile Delinquency - Essay Example e are many theories that can be used to explain delinquent behavior, this paper will use the routine activity theory to explain the behavior of John and show how it relates to his behavior. According to this theory, people commit crimes when chances for committing crime present themselves (Siegel 123). In delinquency cases, this is mostly the case as teenagers find themselves with a lot of freedom to commit crime and the absence of deterrents only serves to make an opportunity more viable. According to this theory, three aspects must be present for a criminal activity to take place. These features include the presence of a person motivated to perform a crime, a victim of the crime and the absence of deterrents. According to this theory, therefore, criminals are opportunistic in nature. In the case of John, he is a motivated person ready to carry out his criminal activities. After being suspended from school, John may have been motivated to take revenge. From this need to revenge on the school for suspending him, he decided to carry a gun to school and shoot some students. Since there was a motive behind his actions, he is a motivated criminal. Given the fact that he had been suspended for smuggling drugs, John is a chronic offender as he is prone to be breaking the law most of the time. Being subjected to violence was a motivating factor and thus he became a youth at risk. Despite this information, shooting the students is an act of free will rather than a random event. The students who were walking out of a class may have been the first to meet John thus presenting themselves as victims. Given the fact that John was smuggling drugs into school, it is also possible that he was a victim of substance abuse. His record also shows that he had been arrested for carrying illegal substances. His delinquent behavior was noted to have been increasing, culminating in the school shooting incident. He may have become a criminal due to the labeling that he was used to when

Energy conservation Term Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Energy conservation - Term Paper Example The other thing is that the fossil fuels could yield large amounts of energy and happen to be easily combustible (Borowitz, 2004). Fossil fuels are portable and have been in use since centuries. Fossil fuels happen to have a high calorific value and do yield large amounts of energy on combustion (Borowitz, 2004). That is why they are the most preferred source of energy on earth. The other good thing about fossil fuels is that being primarily composed of carbon and hydrogen atoms; they are very stable and easy to handle unlike other sources of energy like the nuclear energy (Borowitz, 2004). Fossil fuels are thereby hassle free and risk free. In the contemporary context the fossil fuels happen to be the most affordable and cost effective source of energy (Borowitz, 2004). However, the one big lacuna with fossil fuels is that they cause pollution and global warming. The burning and combustion of the fossil fuels produces gases like carbon-dioxide, carbon-monoxide and methane that not o nly pollute earthââ¬â¢s atmosphere, but also cause global warming. ... This global warming caused by the burning of fossil fuels gets further augmented by the other polluting human activities like deforestation, which not only denude the earth but also hamper the natural processes that lead to absorption and assimilation of carbon-dioxide and other green house gases produced by human activities like industrialization, transportation, thermal energy generation, etc (Posner, 2004). Thereby fossil fuels are one major cause of global warming. To understand the threat posed by global warming to earthââ¬â¢s environment and ecosystems, the thing that needs to be kept in mind is that the life that evolved on the planet earth over millions of years could only thrive and sustain itself in a specific climate and temperature. Till now the earthââ¬â¢s natural greenhouse effect had kept the temperature on earth ideally suitable for the survival of the dependent flora and fauna and ecosystems (Posner, 2004). However, with the accelerated greenhouse effect caused by pollution unleashed by the rampant and sustained usage of fossil fuels, the temperatures on earth are gradually augmenting. This is giving way to climate change, which simply means that owing to the rising pollution, around the earth the temperatures are raising, sea levels are rising and seasons are shifting (Posner, 2004). The survival of life on earth requires resources like food and water. However, with the augmenting global warming a day may come when the phenomena like droughts, storms and hurricanes, threatened ecosystems, and changing landscapes caused by global warming may threaten the existence of life on earth. To restrain and slow down the negative

Strategies in Teaching Literature Essay Example for Free
Strategies in Teaching Literature Essay Upon reading the introduction, I was interested to finish the entire reading. Not because it was assigned but because really I got excited and interested. As Rogoff says, (1990) ââ¬Ëa childââ¬â¢s meaning construction involves a relation between the individual and the social and cultural environments in which each is inherently involved in the others definition. None exists separately.ââ¬â¢(p.89). Which means, a personââ¬â¢s classroom practice and participation is related to the kind of environment that he has outside school. In my view, I would agree to what Rogoff has said, basing on my personal experience in the two types of school that I have attended. When I was in grade school, I have attended in both Private Catholic School and in an Elementary School in a small village. When I was in that private school, I lived in an exclusive subdivision with the cable TV as my best friend. If Iââ¬â¢m not in school, Iââ¬â¢ll be just at home watching the MTV Channel, Discovery Channel, HBO, and Cartoon Network. My friends visit rarely and if they do, we just play computer games or watch English movies. When I was forcibly transferred to a public school, I lived in a small village with no cable, no internet, no English movies and no computers or computer games. So when I am not in school, Iââ¬â¢m with my friends and my cousins who only play birus, luksong-tinik and skipping rope. When I was in a private school, I notice that I participate less in any classroom or school activities. I only talk when called. When I was in a public school meanwhile, I love engaging in group activities whether itââ¬â¢s classroom or school. Well we can say that there are a lot of factors. And I think, undeniably, having been welcomed by peers and doing group activities outside school also developed my interpersonal skill. So it is a lot easier for me to participate in school activities. Whoââ¬â¢s better at reading? Iââ¬â¢d say that itââ¬â¢s definitely not because of gender that a person is good in reading. And I did not see reading as an activity for girls. I grew up in a family wherein I have never seen my mom read but my dad does. He reads the newspaper and legal books every morning. I have a brother but he abhors reading. Heââ¬â¢d rather go out and play with his friends. We have a lot of books at home but Iââ¬â¢d rather be in front of the television. If I am good in reading, thatââ¬â¢s because I am good in listening, watching and most of all mimicking. I mimic those characters that I see on TV (good thing that I only watch English shows back then). I know a person who is very BAD with reading. He reads in a fragmented manner and ends up not understanding what he had read. He does not have books but owns a number of e-books. He said his dad reads self-help books but he never got interested in reading. Heââ¬â¢d rather go out in the streets and play with friends. He also loves watching English movies which somehow explains why his English is phenomenal when he talks (sometimes he sounds like a native speaker) and how much his English sucks when he reads. In conclusion, the kind of environment that you have at home would manifest in your actions in school. A personââ¬â¢s society and culture at home greatly affects his or her performance in school. A person can be very good at school not because the school is great but because his home is or it can also be the other way around.

Free Narrative Essays - Trip Through The Soft Soft Sand :: Personal Narrative Essays
Trip Through The Soft Soft Sand It was a warm, dry summers day in the great bowl of Nevada's desert when I made my grave error. We learn from our errors, so in some cases it doesn't hurt to make them provided there is not a permanent repercussion from your mistake. I have a rock that reminds me of this incident and I would like to tell you how this rock resembles my experience. Jamie(my girlfriend) and I were returning on a Sunday afternoon from a very successful and safe caving trip to the Great Basin National Park. The weather was just right for traveling and we were reminiscing about all of the beautiful natural formations we saw underground. Caving is a very exciting sport, upon entering a cave you leave the mundane world behind and enter a wonderful wonderland. From the commonly known stalactites and stalagmites to the lesser known soda straws and cave bacon. After a few days of exploring caves in the park we were ready to head home. With tired muscles and dusty bodies we were ready for warm showers and soft beds. Upon exiting the park and traveling along the long strait path of the highway home we spotted a dark hole in a rock formation along the side of the road. Being true cavers and adventurous types we decided we had to poke our heads in to take a look around. I veered off the road in started heading in the direction of the rock formation. Unfortunately although driving along what seemed to be tracks I was getting myself deeper and deeper into very soft sand. This was my mistake, traveling along a path that was untested and the whereabouts of the destination unknown. "Are you sure you know what you are doing" said Jamie as the tires began to spin more and more in the soft particles of sand. "Sure, don't you see the tracks in the sand? Others have been this way, and hey, if they can do it, why can't we?" I said this half heatedly based on the fact that I was moving slower and slower as we progressed. Seeing that we were close enough to the precipice I stopped the car

Making Habits
We want from our target market to make a habit of eating their meals in our restaurants. If we are able to reach them, this will help us to grow at the end of the first year. In addition to this, we have another objective which is to decrease the number of people who are not aware and people who are resisting to not purchase our goods. In this case, we are planning to encourage them to taste our products and take their opinions about them to adjust our goods according to their needs and wants. Stressing our competitive advantage to our target customers is our another goal which makes them loyal to our restaurants.Identify the marketing segment for the product and explain why this segment was selected. Because we are producing healthy fast foods for different diet programs, mass marketing does not fit our marketing strategy. Therefore we segment the market based on Demographics. For example, if gender is taken into consideration, woman and man should take different amount of calories per day in order to carry on their daily activities. Besides, amount of calories are taken by young people, adults, and elderly people changes as well according to their heights, weights, and activity levels. Therefore when our customers come to our restaurants, they should be able to find a food that best fits their diet in order to be satisfied. Moreover, we also segment the market based on geographic as well. In this case, we are planning to run our business in United States because there is a high demand for healthy foods since people want to live healthy and longer. Discuss the target market and why these customers will be targeted. We segmented market according to peopleââ¬â¢s ages and genders. We decided to target people whose ages are between 18 and 64 or more and tried to figure out the market size.According to US and World Population Clocks in the US Census Bureau web page, there are 309,092,421 people living in America now. Again, according to the report posted on US Census Bureau, Meyer (2001) stated that people whose age is under 18 is 26 percent, people whose age is between 18 and 64 is 62 percent and people whose age is more than 64 is 12 percent of US population. So if we assume that the percentage of people whose ages are between 18 and 64 or more remain unchanged from 2000 to 2010, the total population of young people, adults and elderly people is now 228,728,319. 62%+12%=74%, 309,092,421? 74%). Moreover, if we assume that 50 percent of this amount is woman and 50 percent of it man. So we have 114,364,159 men and 114,364,159 women whose ages are between 18 and 64 or more. This is a huge number and it seems that targeting this segment is profitable. Furthermore, this market size can grow in the future because in 2000 the total US population was approximately 281 million according to US Census Bureau 2000 report. (Meyer 2001). Today, as I mentioned above it is nearly 309 million. Conduct a SWOT (strength, weakness, opportunities and treats analysis for company. One of our strengths is offering healthy foods. Our menu contains foods that they are rich in terms of protein, vitamins, mineral etc. which play an important role in the structure of human body. Secondly, while we are preparing our menu, we consult nutritionists about the ingredients, the types to enhance the variety and cooking techniques. In addition to this, our customers can benefit from the dietician service on every Mondays, and Fridays between 1-5pm. They can ask their questions and have a chance to take medical support. Moreover, we are using organic and fresh foods while we are cooking and these vegetables and ruits are produced and picked diligently. This is also one of our strengths that help us to meet our customersââ¬â¢ expectations. Unfortunately, we have also some weaknesses as well. One of the most important weaknesses of our healthy fast food restaurant is our prices. To produce organic vegetables and fruits is very costly. Therefore this is reflected in prices of those kinds of products. Because organic foods are crucial ingredients of our foods, we also have to reflect the prices of vegetables and fruits to our food prices in order to make profit. In addition to this, because we do not offer any unhealthy foods such as fried chicken, fried potato, hamburger etc. our foods may not fit the peopleââ¬â¢s tastes. Beside our strengths and weaknesses, we have also some opportunities coming from macro environment. Firstly, people love eating in Unites States and they like to know about different and new foods. In addition to this, United States is the best place to run a fast food restaurant because of being a home country of fast food industry. Secondly, number of obese people is increasing day by day in United States because of overeating fast foods.Since these kinds of meals are unhealthy and they can cause serious health problems, this makes people more conscious while they are making decision about food choices. Therefore they tend to eat more healthy foods. Thirdly, organic food industry is growing in Unites States and people tend to consume organic foods because of being healthful compared to regular vegetables and fruits. Furthermore, number one fast food chains such as McDonaldââ¬â¢s, Burger King, etc. do not offer rich healthy meals alternative to unhealthy ones. In this case, consumers are in pursuit of healthy food restaurants.Lastly, in United States technology is advanced a lot to prepare fast and healthy foods. This leads fast food restaurants to work more efficient. We also have some threats caused by macro environment as well. For example, people may not have enough purchasing power to buy healthy foods. In this case unhealthy foods seems cheaper to them. Therefore they may tend to prefer unhealthy fast food restaurants. Besides, organic foods are expensive. As a result, restaurants that are not using organic foods charge lower prices to their meals compared to restaurants that use those kinds of egetables and fruits. Moreover, eating hamburger, fried potato, fried chicken, cheese burger, etc. can seem more attractive to customers. Therefore customers may prefer places that offer those foods. Describe the market position for your product and service When we are positioning our product, the quality and the price are taken into consideration and we compared our product with the one that is produced by our competitors. In the fast food market, we have many competitors; however our number one and well known competitors are McDonalds, Burger King, Subway, Taco Bell, Wendyââ¬â¢s and others. In figure one, circles which are depicted closely represent our competitors and the upper circle represents our fast food company. The competitorsââ¬â¢ circles are depicted closely because they are perceived more or less the same by consumers. For example, their menus and prices are more or less the same. They are using nearly same strategies. For instance, both Burger King and McDonalds have the dollar menus. Although our competitors offer some kinds of healthy foods such as salads, grilled chicken, etc. they are still selling unhealthy foods. On the other hand, our companyââ¬â¢s number one strength is always serving healthy foods to our customers. Besides, we are offering free dietician service for our customers. Our customers can ask their questions and get a customized service. In light of these facts, our product quality is high relative to our competitors. price Xââ¬â¢s Healthy Fast Food Restaurant Low qualityHigh quality Our competitors Figure 1 Perceptual Map In addition to our product quality, our productsââ¬â¢ prices are also higher than the average prices as well. Because organic foodsââ¬â¢ prices are high, we have to reflect this to our prices.According to figure 1 it can be seen that our competitors dominate us in terms of prices. However, we also dominate them in terms of product quality as well. Recommendations Service is an intangible product and Xââ¬â¢s Healthy Fast Food Restaurants are producing both tangible product (i. e. food) and intangible product (i. e. dietician service). In service industry customer satisfaction is very important. If a company satisfies their customerââ¬â¢s needs and wants, they become loyal. Therefore management should know whether their customers are happy with the service provided or not. This is the case that Xââ¬â¢s Healthy Fast Food Restaurant can be face with. Therefore we should do some surveys to measure the satisfaction level of our customers about the service quality. There are many tools to do this. For example, Winner (2004) stated that ââ¬Å"One of the most popular approaches to measuring service quality is the SERVQUAL instrumentâ⬠(p. 418). In this type of questionnaire there are several questions that measure the quality of service. If we put servqual surveys on customersââ¬â¢ table and request to fill them after they finish their meal we can measure the satisfaction level of our customers by looking the results and this helps us to improve our service quality. Because service is an intangible product, customers may not know what they are buying until they buy. One author said that ââ¬Å"â⬠¦the service providerââ¬â¢s task is to make the service tangible in one or more waysâ⬠(Kotler 1999 p. 648). In this case, we should find some ways to make our product tangible. For example, if we give importance to keep our restaurants clean, our customers may think that we prepare our foods diligently. Providing a qualified and quick service can be another way to make our product tangible. If consumers see how we deliver our service quickly, they always prefer us. ReferencesKotler, P. (1999). Shelley R. Brough CDA-Competency Statement #1: February 9,2013 To Establish and Maintain a Safe, Healthy Learning Environment Functional Area #1: Safe My goal in the functional area of safe is to provide a safe indoor and outdoor environment. Young infants are placed on their backs when they are sleeping. The crib is free of blankets, toys, or other soft materials that could cause suffocation. Mobile infants are kept safe by making sure that there isn't anything that is small enough they could put in their mouths and swallow.Toys are checked daily for broken or loose parts. Toddlers are kept safe by showing them the proper use of toys. They are encouraged to follow safety rules such as walking instead of running and sitting on a chair instead of climbing on it. As a child care provider I always have to check toys and playground equipment for any damages that may injury the children in my care, not only do I have to check toys and equipment I must check under toys outside for any crea tures that may harm any of the children in my care.I am always giving gentle reminders of the rules that will keep them safe. Functional Area #2: Healthy My goal in the functional area of healthy is to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. Young infants are kept healthy by washing hands of both the caregiver and the child before and after every diaper change as well as sanitizing the changing table. Disposable gloves are used for the diapering process. Mobile infants are kept healthy by cleaning and sanitizing play areas daily.Mouthed toys are immediately removed from the play area for later cleaning. To keep toddlers healthy, nutritious meals are planned . Good eating habits are modeled and the child is encouraged to eat new foods. Parents of children in our care are to provide a clean blanket and mat cover each week. We teach the children that their blankets and pillows are for nap time only and we do not pull them out till it is nap time. Each child has their own cubby for p ersonal items and everything is labeled. Functional Area #3: Learning EnvironmentMy goal in the functional area of learning environment is to provide a stimulating learning environment that promotes independence. Young infants are given the opportunity for tummy time to develop the strength to hold their heads up. Mobile infants are given the opportunity to explore their environment by creeping and crawling but do so under supervision. Toddlers' learning environment includes creating a day to day routine for them as regular meal times, play times and rest times. This allows them to know what to expect.

Stoichiometry Definition in Chemistry
Stoichiometry Definition in Chemistry Stoichiometry is one of the most important subjects in general chemistry. It is typically introduced after discussing parts of the atom and unit conversions. While its not difficult, many students get put off by the complicated-sounding word. For this reason, it may be introduced as Mass Relations. StoichiometryDefinition Stoichiometry is the study of the quantitative relationships or ratios between two or more substances undergoing a physical change or chemical change (chemical reaction). The word derives from theà Greek words:à stoicheionà (meaning element) andà metronà (meaning to measure). Most often, stoichiometry calculations deal with the mass or volumes of products and reactants. Pronunciation Pronounce stoichiometry asà stoy-kee-ah-met-tree or abbreviate it as stoyk. What Is Stoichiometry? Jeremias Benjaim Richter defined stoichiometry in 1792 as the science of measuring quantities or mass ratios of chemical elements. You might be given a chemical equation and the mass of one reactant or product and asked to determine the quantity of another reactant or product in the equation. Or, you might be given the quantities of reactants and products and asked to write the balanced equation that fits the math. Important Concepts in Stoichiometry You must master the following chemistry concepts to solve stoichiometry problems: Balancing equationsConverting between grams and molesCalculating molar massCalculating mole ratios Remember, stoichiometry is the study of mass relations. To master it, you need to be comfortable with unit conversions and balancing equations. From there, the focus is on mole relationships between reactants and products in a chemical reaction. Mass-Mass Stoichiometry Problem One of the most common types of chemistry problems youll use stoichiometry to solve is the mass-mass problem. Here are the steps to solve a mass-mass problem: Correctly identify the problem as a mass-mass problem. Usually youre given a chemical equation, like:A 2B ââ â CMost often, the question is a word problem, such as:Assume 10.0 grams of A reacts completely with B. How many grams of C will be produced?Balance the chemical equation. Make certain you have the same number of each type of atom on both the reactants and products side of the arrow in the equation. In other words, apply the Law of Conservation of Mass.Convert any mass values in the problem into moles. Use the molar mass to do this.Use molar proportion to determine unknown quantities of moles. Do this by setting two molar ratios equal to each other, with the unknown as the only value to solve.Convert the mole value you just found into mass, using the molar mass of that substance. Excess Reactant, Limiting Reactant, and Theoretical Yield Because atoms, molecules, and ions react with each other according to molar ratios, youll also encounter stoichiometry problems that ask you to identify the limiting reactant or any reactant that is present in excess. Once you know how many moles of each reactant you have, you compare this ratio to the ratio required to complete the reaction. The limiting reactant would be used up before the other reactant, while the excess reactant would be the one leftover after the reaction proceeded. Since the limiting reactant defines exactly how much of each reactant actually participates in a reaction, stoichiometry is used to determine theoretical yield. This is how much product can be formed if the reaction uses all of the limiting reactant and proceeds to completion. The value is determined using the molar ratio between the amount of limiting reactant and product.

Communication and Culture Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words - 1
Communication and Culture - Essay Example Based on the source, culture is ordinary. This means that it is commonly performed. Every member of the society is participating in different ways and contributing to culture. Every activity then can be considered as part of the culture since it can be related to the social group to which a person or a group of person belongs. Basically, culture can be considered as a way of life since it describes the identity, visions, history and future of a community. In addition, culture can also be perceived in the form of different expressions such as arts, music, food culture, technology and other forms of knowledge and institutions (Williams). By being ordinary, it can be considered that culture is two-fold in terms of definition and application. One facet of culture is the identity pertained and projected by the whole community. For example India is known for the caste system, China for the practice of socialized industries and Japan for technological principles and prowess. If the said countries are critically analyzed on the basis of being in Asia, it can be roughly generalized that Asian culture is based on creativity and high level of diversity on the basis of the fact that the culture and identity of each nation is very distinct from the adjacent countries. Within each nation, any member of the population also has a distinct view and contribution to culture through their personal way of life. They communicate and survive through the application of tried and tested principles as well as trying new ideas and knowledge for future guidance and reference. Through the two-fold point of view regarding culture, it can then be applicable in terms of a personââ¬â¢s own attitudes, objective and behavior and also the traditions and practices of the community where the person belongs. One of the important features of the culture and society is the political economy which can be defined on the basis of the two roots of the

Implementing Organizational Change Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 1
Implementing Organizational Change - Essay Example The third stage is process reengineering. In this stage it is assumed that incremental changes have a minimal impact, important improvements may be attained by disregarding how the process is undertaken during the present and starting on a clean slate. The final stage is the corporate transformation that is more drastic and involves changes that affect the organization in general. It may include acquisitions and mergers. One of my peers posted an article on Tichyââ¬â¢s three types of change. The article stated that any change within an organization was caused by changes in the technical, political and cultural aspects. This article was properly researched however failed to take into account the stages of change within an entity (Lune, 2006). The other article was on Balogun and Hope-Haileyââ¬â¢s Change Model. This model states that there are four types of change within organizations that take four strategies into account. Two classifications are based on the end result and include realignment and transformation. The other two classes are based on nature of change and include big bang and incremental

Negligence Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words
Negligence - Essay Example This paper explores the differences among negligence, gross negligence, and malpractice. In addition, the paper discusses the importance of documentation and its connection with a negligence case in which a patientââ¬â¢s wrong leg was amputated. Negligence, Gross Negligence, and Malpractice In general, negligence refers to the failure by a nurse to give care to a patient in a reasonable and prudent manner in the prevailing circumstances. Thus, negligence refers to any harm caused by a nurseââ¬â¢s carelessness, rather than intentional harm. On the other hand, malpractice is a professional negligence, which occurs when an authorized and licensed nurse fails to give patient care according to the laid down standards (Phillips et al., 2004). That is, care below the standards set by the regulatory body. It is worth noting that the poor standard of such care subsequently causes harm to a patient. The table below summarises the differences and similarities between malpractice and negli gence Malpractice Negligence Definition A professional nurse gives substandard Though prudent and reasonable, a nurse gives unreasonable care Intentional Yes Can be intentional or not Lawsuits in Civil Courts Civil Courts Proof of lawsuit Duty, Breach, Causation and Damages Duty, Breach, Causation and Damages An example of a malpractice is a nurse who intentionally harms a patient by not performing his or her duties according to the laid down procedures and standards. On the other hand, a nurse harming a patient due to carelessness amounts to negligent act. Therefore, any unintentional action or omission that causes patient injuries is negligence while failure to adhere to nursing standards of practice may result in a malpractice lawsuit (Phillips et al., 2004). According to the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO), malpractice refers to an inappropriate, unacceptable, and unethical conducts caused by an unreasonable lack of skill by a professional. On the other hand, gross negligence simply refers extreme cases of carelessness by a nurse. The implication by gross negligence is that a nurse has gone far below the standard of care with which a prudent and reasonable nurse may act towards a patientââ¬â¢s care (Phillips et al., 2004). In gross negligence, there is no trace of or slight evidence of care, even by the standards of a careless person. Thus, gross negligence has a degree difference with negligence. Several reasons have been cited as the main causes of negligence, gross negligence, and malpractice including delegation of duties, early discharge, shortage of nurses, hospital downsizing, numerous and advances in technology, better-informed patients, and expanded legal liability targeting medical professionals. With regards to task delegation, many hospitals have certain cost-cutting and cost-containment strategies, which propel them to delegate nursing duties to unlicensed assistants (Phillips et al., 2004). These assis tants may not be aware of a facility's or a regulatorââ¬â¢s standards of care or nursing practice act. Second, many facilities discharge patients quite early, prior to full recovery while they still need acute and intensive nursing care. Other cost-containment strategies used in facilities are reduction in the number of nurses, which increases workloads for nurses, thus the likelihood for errors to occur. The many technological

The Awakening 3 :: essays research papers
Make Your Choice… Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã What is the purpose of life? What are we all reaching for? Many have pondered on this subject and have come to one conclusion – happiness. However, it is our choice whether to reach this state or not. In Kate Chopin's work, 'The Awakening,'; the main character, Edna, made her choice. She chose to be a slave to the world. She chose to live in the shadow of her husband. She chose to give into her society. It was these choices that kept her from her true passions and dreams, which was to live for herself. As one can see, sacrificing oneself for the good of another inhibits one from attaining true happiness. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã Many philosophers have dealt with the question of whether to live a life of servitude or to pursue one's greater happiness. Immanuel Kant stipulates that the more people cultivate their reason, the less likely they are to find happiness. He states that 'everyone is/should be aware of his/her duty, or how one ought to act.'; Everyone has a goal within himself/herself, and it is his/her responsibility to reach for it and achieve it. In 'The Awakening,'; Edna does not take responsibility. She tries her entire life to fit in the prescribed mold that her husband set for her. She invests so much time into duty and responsibility that she loses any happiness that she hoped to achieve. She was not aware of her 'responsibility as a human being.'; She was not 'aware of one's rational powers in the exercise of moral duty.'; Edna knew she was not happy living as a puppet. She wanted a change. With time, Kant noted, the person who devotes their life to reason finds themselves needing a release, in the end despising reason, and eventually pursuing only their true happiness. Ã Ã Ã Ã Ã In keeping with Kant's philosophy, Edna's life has been riddled with reason and duty, essentially giving herself away to the people around her. This devotion to those people causes her to break away from her normal life and moves her to focus on finding her inherent happiness. After being 'reasonable'; for the twenty-eight years of her life, Edna breaks down. She wants to pursue love and disregard her duty to her husband and children. She falls in what she considers girlish love with the character Robert. She proclaims to him, 'I love you…only you; no one but you.

Fool Chapter 24
TWENTY-FOUR BOUDICCA RISING All my years as an orphan, only to find that I had a mother, but she killed herself over cruelty from the king, the only father I had ever knownâ⬠¦ To find I had a father, but he, too, was murdered by order of the kingâ⬠¦ To find the best friend I'd ever known was the mother of the woman I adored, and she was murdered, horribly, by order of the king, because of what I had doneâ⬠¦ To go from being an orphan clown to a bastard prince to a cutthroat avenger for ghosts and witches in less than a week, and from upstart crow to strategist general in a matter of monthsâ⬠¦ To go from telling bawdy stories for the pleasure of an imprisoned holy woman to planning the overthrow of a kingdomâ⬠¦ It was bloody disorienting, and not a little tiring. And I'd built quite an appetite. A snack was in order ââ¬â perhaps even a full meal, with wine. I watched from the arrow loops in my old apartment in the barbican as Cordelia entered the castle. She rode a great white warhorse, and both she and the horse were fitted with full plate armor, fashioned in black with gold trim. The golden lion of England was emblazoned on her shield, a golden fleur-de-lis of France on her breastplate. Two columns of knights rode behind her, carrying lances with the banners of Wales, Scotland, Ireland, Normandy, France, Belgium, and Spain. Spain? She'd conquered bloody Spain in her spare time? She was rubbish at chess before she left. Real war must be easier. She reined up her horse in the middle of the drawbridge, stood in the stirrups, pulled off her helmet and shook out her long golden hair. Then she smiled up at the gatehouse. I ducked out of sight ââ¬â I'm not sure why. ââ¬Å"Mine!â⬠she barked, then she laughed and led the column into the castle. Yes, I know, love, but bad form, isn't it, to march about with your own bloody army laying claim to random property, innit? Unladylike. She was bloody glorious. Yes, a snack would do nicely. I laughed a bit myself and danced my way to the great hall, indulging in the odd somersault along the way. Perhaps going to the great hall in search of food wasn't the best idea, and perhaps it wasn't my real intention, which was just as well, since instead of a repast, the bodies of Lear and his two daughters were laid out on three high tables, Lear on the dais where his throne sat, Regan and Goneril below, on either side, on the main floor. Cordelia stood over her father, still in her armor, her helmet tucked under her arm. Her long hair hung in her face, so I couldn't tell if she was crying. ââ¬Å"He's a good deal more pleasant now,â⬠said I. ââ¬Å"Quieter. Although he moves about the same speed.â⬠She looked up and smiled, a great dazzling smile, then seemed to remember she was grieving and bowed her head again. ââ¬Å"Thank you for your condolences, Pocket. I see you have managed to fend off pleasantness in my absence.â⬠ââ¬Å"Only by keeping you constantly in my thoughts, child.â⬠ââ¬Å"I've missed you, Pocket.â⬠ââ¬Å"And I you, lamb.â⬠She stroked her father's hair. He wore the heavy crown that he'd thrown on the table before Cornwall and Albany what seemed so long ago. ââ¬Å"Did he suffer?â⬠Cordelia asked. I considered my answer, which I almost never do. I could have vented my ire, cursed the old man, made testament to his life of cruelty and wickedness, but that would serve Cordelia not a bit, and me very little. Still, I needed to temper my tale with some truth. ââ¬Å"Yes. At the end, he suffered greatly in his heart. At the hands of your sisters, and under the weight of regret for doing wrong to you. He suffered, but not in his body. The pain was in his soul, child.â⬠She nodded and turned from the old man. ââ¬Å"You shouldn't call me child, Pocket. I'm a queen now.â⬠ââ¬Å"I see that. Smashing armor, by the way, very St. George. Come with a dragon, did it?â⬠ââ¬Å"No, an army, as it turns out.â⬠ââ¬Å"And an empire, evidently.â⬠ââ¬Å"No, I had to take that myself.â⬠ââ¬Å"I told you your disagreeable nature would serve you in France.â⬠ââ¬Å"That you did. Right after you told me that princesses were only good for ââ¬â what was it ââ¬â ââ¬Ëdragon food and ransom markers'?â⬠There it was, that smile again, sunshine on my frozen heart, it felt. And like a frostbitten limb, there were pins and needles as the feeling returned. Suddenly I felt the small purse with the witch's puffball heavy on my belt. ââ¬Å"Yes, well, one can't be right all the time, it would undermine one's credibility as a fool.â⬠ââ¬Å"Your credibility is already in question in that regard. Kent tells me that the kingdom fell before me so easily because of your doing.â⬠ââ¬Å"I didn't know it was you, I thought it was bloody Jeff. Where is Jeff, anyway?â⬠ââ¬Å"In Burgundy with the duke ââ¬â well, the Queen of Burgundy. They both insist on being referred to as the Queen of Burgundy. Turns out you were right about them, which again counts against your standing as a fool. I caught them together at the palace in Paris. They confessed that they'd fancied each other since they were boys. Jeff and I came to an arrangement.â⬠ââ¬Å"Aye, there's usually an arrangement in those situations ââ¬â the arrangement of the queen's head and body at different addresses.â⬠ââ¬Å"Nothing like that, Pocket. Jeff is a decent chap. I didn't love him, but he was a good fellow. Saved me when Father threw me out, didn't he? And by the time this happened I'd won the guard and most of the court to my sympathies ââ¬â if anyone was going to lose his head, it wasn't me. France took some territories, Toulouse, Provence, and some bits of the Pyrenees with him, but considering the territories I've taken, overall it's more than fair. The boys have a crashingly large palace in Burgundy that they perpetually redecorate. They're quite happy.â⬠ââ¬Å"The boys? Bloody Burgundy buggering froggy France? By the dangling ovaries of Odin, there's a song in there somewhere!â⬠She grinned. ââ¬Å"I've purchased a divorce from the Pope. Bloody dear[46] it was, too. If I'd known Jeff was going to insist on sanction of the Church I'd have pushed to reinstate the old Discount Pope.â⬠The sound of the great doors opening echoed through the hall and Cordelia turned, fierce fire in her eyes. ââ¬Å"I said I was to be left alone!â⬠But then Drool, who had lumbered through, pulled up as if he'd seen a ghost, and started to back away. ââ¬Å"Sorry. Beggin' your pardons. Pocket, I got Jones and your hat.â⬠He held up the puppet stick and my coxcomb, forgot for a second that he'd been shouted at, then resumed backing out the doors. ââ¬Å"No, come, Drool,â⬠said Cordelia. She waved him in and the guards closed the door behind him. I wondered what the knights and other nobles might think that the warrior queen would admit no one to the hall except two fools. Probably that she was merely another in a long line of family nutters. Drool paused as he passed Regan's body and lost his sense of purpose. He lay Jones and my hat on the table next to her, then pinched the hem of her gown and began to raise it for a peek. ââ¬Å"Drool!â⬠I barked. ââ¬Å"Sorry,â⬠said the Natural. Then he spotted Goneril's body and moved to her side. He stood there, looking down. In a moment his shoulders began to shake and soon he broke into great, rib-wrenching sobs and proceeded to drip tears upon Goneril's bosom. Cordelia looked at me with pleading in her eyes, and I, at her, with something that must have seemed similar. We were shits, together, we were, that we didn't grieve for these people, this family. ââ¬Å"They was fit,â⬠said Drool. Soon he was petting Goneril's cheek, then her shoulder, then both her shoulders, then her breasts, then he climbed on the table on top of her and commenced a rhythmic and unseemly sobbing that approximated in timbre and volume a bear being shaken in a wine cask. I retrieved Jones from Regan's side and clouted the oaf about the head and shoulders until he climbed off the erstwhile Duchess of Albany and slipped through the drape and hid under the table. ââ¬Å"I loved them,â⬠Drool said. Cordelia stayed my hand and bent down and lifted the drapery. ââ¬Å"Drool, mate,â⬠she said. ââ¬Å"Pocket doesn't mean to be cruel, he doesn't understand how you feel. Still, we have to keep it to ourselves. It's not proper to dry-hump the deceased, love.â⬠ââ¬Å"It ain't?â⬠ââ¬Å"No. The duke will be here soon and he'd be offended.â⬠ââ¬Å"What 'bout the other one. Her duke is dead.â⬠ââ¬Å"Just the same, it's not proper.â⬠ââ¬Å"Sorry.â⬠He hid his head under the drape. She stood and looked at me, turning away from Drool and rolling her eyes and smiling. There was so much to tell her, that I'd shagged her mother, and we, technically, were cousins, and, well, things might get awkward. It was my instinct, as a performer, to keep the moment light, so I said, ââ¬Å"I killed your sisters, more or less.â⬠She stopped smiling. ââ¬Å"Captain Curan said they poisoned each other.â⬠ââ¬Å"Aye. I gave them the poison.â⬠ââ¬Å"Did they know it was poison?â⬠ââ¬Å"They did.â⬠ââ¬Å"Couldn't be helped, then, could it? They were right vicious bitches anyway. Tortured me through my childhood. You saved me the effort.â⬠ââ¬Å"They just wanted someone to love them,â⬠I said. ââ¬Å"Don't make the case with me, fool. You're the one that killed them. I was just going to take their lands and property. Maybe humiliate them in public.â⬠ââ¬Å"But you just said ââ¬â ââ¬Å" ââ¬Å"I loved them,â⬠said Drool. ââ¬Å"Shut up!â⬠I chorused with Cordelia. The doors cracked open then and Captain Curan peeked his head through. ââ¬Å"Lady, the Duke of Albany has arrived,â⬠said he. ââ¬Å"Give me a moment, then send him in,â⬠said Cordelia. ââ¬Å"Very well.â⬠Curan closed the doors. Cordelia stepped up to me then, she was only a little taller than me, but in armor, somewhat more intimidating than I'd remembered her ââ¬â but no less beautiful. ââ¬Å"Pocket, I've taken quarters in my old solar. I'd like you to visit after supper tonight.â⬠I bowed. ââ¬Å"Does my lady require a story and a jest before bedtime to clear her head of the day's tribulations?â⬠ââ¬Å"No, fool, Queen Cordelia of France, Britain, Belgium, and Spain is going to shag the bloody bells off you.â⬠ââ¬Å"Pardon?â⬠said I, somewhat nonplussed. But then she kissed me. The second time. With great feeling, and she pushed me away. ââ¬Å"I invaded a country for you, you nitwit. I've loved you since I was a little girl. I came back for you, well, and for revenge on my sisters, but mostly for you. I knew you would be waiting for me.â⬠ââ¬Å"How? How did you know?â⬠ââ¬Å"A ghost came to me at the palace in Paris months ago. Scared the barnaise out of Jeff. She's been advising the strategy since.â⬠Enough talk of ghosts, I thought. Let her rest. I bowed again. ââ¬Å"At your bloody beckoning service, love. A humble fool, at your service.â⬠ACT V How I would make him fawn and beg and seek And wait the season and observe the times And spend his prodigal wits in bootless rhymes And shape his service wholly to my hests And make him proud to make me proud that jests! So perttaunt-like would I o'ersway his state That he should be my fool and I his fate. ââ¬â Love's Labour's Lost, Act V, Scene 2, Rosaline
